Destination weddings are growing in popularity. As a travel professional, I put together a number of destination wedding packages for clients, and they would report back to me afterwards about the wonderful and amazing experiences they had.
The idea behind destination wedding packages is this: rather than spending thousands upon thousands of dollars to feed, transport, and even house dozens or perhaps hundreds of distant relatives and acquaintances (many of whom you must invite out of obligation), why not instead spend the money to travel with your closest family and friends to a beautiful resort and hold the marriage there.
 Of course, destination weddings aren't for everyone, but they can be very special, memorable experiences for everyone involved.
In my experience, so me of the most popular locations for destination weddings include Hawaii, Cancun and the Mayan Riviera, St. Lucia, Antigua, and Jamaica.
Of course, Las Vegas destination weddings are a class unto themselves. More people get married in Vegas than anywhere else, and Las Vegas hotels offer a wide range of on-site wedding chapels and wedding planning services.
In fact , many hotels and resorts offer destination wedding packages that can be great values, especially when compared to paying for everything a la carte.
While Hawaii might well be the most popular spot for weddings outside the continental United States, due to this intense demand, weddings in Hawaii can be very expensive.
Far more economical alternatives can be found throughout the Caribbean and Mexico. I have found that the best deals for destination wedding packages can be found in the Cancun and Riveria Maya region of Mexico, followed by Jamaica and St. Lucia.
The Sandals chain also offers reasonably priced wedding packages at their resorts throughout the Caribbean. In the past, Sandals' prohibition against single guests made planning weddings at their resorts more difficult. But since they have dropped this restriction, Sandals have become a more attractive option.
It definitely pays to shop around when planning a destination wedding. But if you do your homework and plan ahead, destination wedding packages can be a great and even reasonably priced alternative to traditional weddings.
